Antimicrobial resistance is not likely to be got rid of completely because the evidence shows that the development of resistance follows the use of antimicrobials, therefore as long as we are using antimicrobials there will be resistance. However, we can slow down the development of resistance by:
- Only taking antimicrobials when necessary
- Finishing our course of antimicrobials and not saving drugs for later use
- Not taking antimicrobials prescribed for someone else
- Not taking antibiotics for colds and 'flu (These illnesses are always caused by viruses)
- Washing our hands regularly to reduce the chance of getting an infection
