What causes traveller's diarrhoea?
|
 | |
Bacterial infections cause most cases of traveller's diarrhoea. The bacteria are usually picked up from contaminated food or water. Traveller's diarrhoea usually occurs within the first week of travel. Some destinations are considered a higher risk than others e.g. the developing countries of Latin America are high risk countries. Also, some people are said to be high risk. These include children, those with bowel diseases or diabetes. See the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention Traveller's Diarrhea website for more information. Because traveller's diarrhoea affects up to 50% of travellers it is important that we do our best to prevent infection.
