Protozoa are simple, primitive animals that consist of just one cell e.g. amoeba. The word 'protozoa' means 'first animal'. About 30 species are parasitic in humans. They are most often found in water (river and seas) and soil. They usually spread through contaminated water, although malaria is caused by a protzoan that is carried by mosquitos.
