Antibacterials are agents that interfere with the growth of bacteria. Strictly speaking, antibiotics are antibacterials. However, the term 'antibacterials' is most often used to describe agents that are used in healthcare and cleaning products rather than medicines. Antibacterials are found in household cleaning products, soaps, some shampoos and more recently bonded into products such as chopping boards, plastic containers, fabrics and toys. There are two types of antibacterials: non-residue forming (e.g. alcohols and peroxides) and residue forming (e.g. triclosan).
