About Bugs and Drugs on the Web
This site has been developed, with funding from the Department of Health, in response to current concern about antimicrobial resistance, and to address education of healthcare professionals and the public, as well as promotion of prudent prescribing. The title of the site "Bugs & Drugs on the Web" was developed by the Science Museum as part of the live science program in which this site was tested for usability. See our Science Museum pages for more information
The site aims to answer frequently asked questions about antimicrobial resistance, point to relevant resources and highlight current news topics. The site will be developed to include an 'ask the expert' facility and a discussion board. The information on the site was written by information scientists at NeLI and has been reviewed by Professor Julius Weinberg, a doctor who has extensive experience in the field of Communicable Disease and was recently an Expert Advisor for Sub-committee 1 of the House of Lords Science and Engineering Select Committee. See his home page at City University for more information. In addition, we are grateful to Dr Mike Thomas for his help with editing and reviewing the section on coughs and chest infections. Dr Thomas is a Research Fellow in the Department of General Practice at the University of Aberdeen and a practising GP in Gloucestershire. About the National electronic Library of Infection (http://www.neli.org.uk)
The National electronic Library of Infection (NeLI), one of the Specialist Libraries of the NeLH, is providing an on-line, evidence-based, quality-tagged Internet portal to the best available evidence on prevention, treatment and investigation of communicable disease. In addition to providing a single point to available electronic resources on communicable diseases, the key value of the library is in a quality appraisal of all posted documents. This procedure is conducted in collaboration with all major professional societies and expert committees in the area of communicable disease.
Each document considered the best available evidence on a particular subject is assigned a quality tag, by a member of a professional society. The quality tag consists of a bottom line critically summarizing the paper, and a checklist, which answers brief questions about the methodological issues, level of evidence, potential biases and applicability of the results. The resultant quality tag and a signature of the particular society are attached to the document and made available through the NeLI.
In addition, the site will provide an on-line forum to allow professionals to comment on the quality-tagged papers, as well as to discuss important issues on-line as soon as they arise.
Furthermore, the site will provide professional commentary on information hitting the news, instant dissemination of outbreak control procedures, moderated discussion list, regular newsletter and user alerts on requested issues.
