Do antibiotics help cure cystitis?

Yes sometimes. Cystitis is an infection in the bladder common in women. A common symptom is discomfort on passing urine. For those women with cystits that is caused by bacterial infection antibiotics can help. It is possible to determine whether or not the symptoms are caused by a bacterial infection by a simple urine dipstick test that your doctor can do at the surgery. Those that aren't caused by bacteria are known as the urethral syndrome and these women are unlikely to benefit from taking antibiotics. The SMAC report recommends that in the case of bacterial infection a course of antibiotics is limited to 3 days if the woman is otherwise healthy and there are no complications with the cystitis.
