Antivirals are drugs that kill or prevent the growth of viruses. Viral infections are much harder to treat than bacterial infections because viruses live inside our cells, making it harder for the immune system to see them and attack them . Recently some antiviral drugs have been developed, e.g. Acyclovir is an antiviral drug that targets the herpes virus and there are a variety of drugs continually being developed to treat HIV (See the HIV section for more information. Whilst there are few successful antiviral drugs for treating infection, vaccines have been developed to prevent infection by many viruses e.g. smallpox, yellow fever, measles (See the Vaccination section for more information)
